The Best Shower Routine for Healthy Hair
We all have a routine when it comes to showering, shampooing, and conditioning. What’s not talked about is the best process for healthy hair and how it varies, scalp by scalp. There are plenty of changes and adjustments to make to achieve much healthier and happier locks. Next time you hop in the shower, switch it up with these 7 tips!
Don’t over-wash your hair.
The first step for achieving the perfect shower schedule for healthy hair is to avoid over-washing your hair. Of course, it’s important to wash your hair, especially the scalp. But it’s also important to avoid drying out the scalp and ends.
You want the natural oils in your hair to remain consistent. Finding the best schedule for your hair is essential. Some might tell you to avoid washing your hair every day, but sometimes oily hair needs it! Not everyone is the same.
If you can do two, three, four, or five days without washing, that works, too! Just be sure you aren’t clogging the pores in your scalp. Using dry shampoo is great for last minute fixes, but it shouldn’t be a replacement for actual shampoo. This is the easiest way to clog up your pores and stop your oils from producing altogether. Something you never want! Treat your hair when it gets oily. And give it a break when it’s not. It’s that simple!

Now that we’ve decided on the best shampoo schedule for our hair type, let’s get into the specifics of our shampoo routine. While in the shower, focus the shampoo into the roots and scalp. This is what needs cleansing the most.
Avoiding the ends of the hair with shampoo will avoid drying and breakage. If you have trouble with split ends, avoiding those damaged areas altogether will bring some life back to your dry ends. Use shampoo and conditioners that match.
We’ve all mixed and matched shampoos and conditioners before. Personally, I almost always go through my conditioner bottles before my shampoo runs out. This will usually push me to mix two different brands for my shower routine.
However, a great tip for creating the perfect shower routine for healthy hair is to stick to one brand at a time. Our current favorite brand for shampoo and conditioner is . Avoid using a conditioner on the scalp
Just like focusing shampoo on solely the scalp, we’re now going to focus our conditioner only on the ends. Conditioner is best used on the driest parts of your hair, which are typically found where you apply the most heat to your hair. To achieve the best shower routine for healthy hair, avoiding the scalp when conditioning will prevent your hair from looking greasy or weighed down. This will also promote improved volume in your scalp and an all-around healthier feeling.
Detangle your hair after applying conditioner.
Now that you’ve applied your conditioner just to our ends, we’re going to take this process one step further. We like to leave our conditioner in the hair for about 2-5 minutes before rinsing. This way it can do its magic while you do other things like shaving or washing the body.
Once you’re about ready to rinse, take a wide tooth comb and detangle the hair while your conditioner is still on the strands. This will avoid tugging or snarling the hair while you comb.
Starting at the bottom of the hair, you will run the comb carefully though the strands to remove any knots or tangles. Then work your way up to the scalp as you disperse a little bit of conditioner throughout the hair without weighing it down. Don’t rub your hair with your towel.
It’s almost second nature to rub your hair viciously with a towel for a quick dry. But quickly getting rid of excess water is not always the best for our hair. This is especially true if you’re tugging at the hair with a rough towel.
All of that hard work we put into detangling is now ruined. Plus, even tying your hair in a towel could lead to knotting, breakage, or frizzing. It’s best to pat your hair mostly dry with gentle upward motions. And better yet, use a microfiber towel to avoid damage.
To complete our perfected shower routine for healthy hair, we couldn’t forget our final step. After gently towel drying, try your hardest to let your hair air dry as much as possible.
This will avoid any heat damage that is caused by any of the following: blow dryers, straighteners, curling irons, crimpers, wavers, the list goes on and on. These tools are great for styling, but when you’re on a healthy hair detox, it’s best to lock them away in your drawer for the time being. Aim to avoid heat on your hair for at least 5 out of 7 days a week; you’ll see a huge difference!
