Why is Skincare Feminized?
Why is skincare feminized still to this day? We’d like to think that as a society we’ve made progress when it comes to feminizing normal things like skincare and personal hygiene. But it seems that skincare is still perceived as a women-centric practice in the public eye. This is especially true when it comes to marketing schemes and demographic preferences.
Only 32% of men use a facial cleanser on a regular basis. The thought of this makes our skin crawl. Why in the world are gender roles neglecting men a basic skincare regimen? We believe that skincare should be celebrated and marketed to all genders! We all have skin, don’t we?
Skin is skin
Skincare is still feminized because skincare is solely marketed for women, it’s scented for women, packaged for women, advertised for women, you name it. The stigma behind skincare’s feminization is that we believe what the marketing world tells us about a product.
Skin is skin, no matter if it’s on a female or male body. This also goes to say that taking care of your skin does not make you any less masculine as the next guy. Believe it or not, there is nothing feminine about a face mask!
Traditional gender boundaries are made to be broken, especially in this day and age. Just like many things are perceived as masculine, women have now taken new pride in practices such as lifting weights, taking an interest in cars, excelling in sports, etc. Now is the time for men to take ownership of their newfound “masculine” skincare practices.
Male skincare is selling!
Though skincare remains to be a feminine ideal, male skincare is selling. This proves the absurdity about the topic. Male skincare is actually one of the beauty industry’s fasting-growing sectors. Whatever you want to call it: manscaping, men grooming, it works.
Why is skincare feminized? Because men have been taught for too many years not to care, to avoid skincare products altogether. It should be celebrated for dads to sit their sons down and teach them about the importance of taking care of their skin and purchasing products that work. We believe this practice should be normalized for all young boys as soon as their skin needs some extra love. This way, they can take ownership over the importance of taking care of their body.
We’re stuck asking the question “why is skincare feminized?” because we truly do not have an answer. Instead, we want to challenge our male readers to break out of your gender box and buy a skincare product, or five! Although we don’t have the answer as to why skincare is feminized, we do have a solution. Ignore it!In fact, is a perfect place to start.
